London railway stations and airport hit by travel chaos after fire damages signalling equipment

Commuters face long delays to London train services on Monday morning following a trackside fire that damaged signalling equipment. The fire near Clapham Junction on Sunday is expected to cause “major disruption” until later this afternoon, said National Rail . According to the rail operator, Gatwick Express and Southern services between Clapham Junction and London Victoria may be delayed cancelled or revised until 4pm.

Southern and Gatwick Express said: “On Sunday, 27 September, there was a fire next to the track in the Clapham Junction area. The fire caused damage to the signalling equipment on the route and repairs are ongoing. “As a result, trains between Clapham Junction and London Victoria may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, diverted or revised.” An “extremely reduced” train service is running to and from London Victoria until at least 2pm, as emergency engineering repairs take place throughout the morning.

Customers are “strongly advised” to use an alternative London terminal from Victoria and have been told to allow extra time to travel on Monday to reach their final destination. Tickets from Gatwick Express and Southern can be used at no extra cost on alternative services including London Underground and Overground routes. Three London Underground lines also face delays this morning, with minor delays due to train cancellations on the entire Circle and Northern lines and severe delays on the Victoria line while a signal failure is fixed at Brixton.
